Go to A&E or call 999 now if you have:

• Swelling that affects breathing or swallowing, or trismus (can’t open mouth properly).
• Fever/feeling very unwell, fast heartbeat or breathing, confusion, or a non-blanching rash.
• Rapidly spreading facial swelling or eye involvement.

If none of the above apply, book an urgent dental appointment today.

What you can do now

• Use ibuprofen or paracetamol as directed (adults). You may alternate them if suitable. Do not give aspirin to under-16s.
• Rinse gently with warm salt water, choose soft foods, avoid very hot/cold/sugary items.
• Never place aspirin on the tooth or gums – it burns tissues and doesn’t help.

Painkillers ease symptoms, but only dental treatment fixes the cause.
