Broken or chipped tooth
A small chip can usually wait a day or two. A big break, a sharp edge cutting your tongue, or a tooth that hurts needs seeing sooner.
- GDC-registered dentists
- CQC-registered practice
- Prices agreed before treatment
What to do now
- Rinse your mouth with warm water. Keep any broken pieces in milk or a clean container and bring them with you.
- If it’s bleeding, press on it with a clean damp cloth or gauze for 10–20 minutes.
- Cover a sharp edge with sugar-free gum or dental wax from a pharmacy.
- Take painkillers if needed and safe for you. Avoid chewing on that side.
How urgent is it?
- Book today: pain, a big piece missing, pink or red showing in the middle of the tooth, or a tooth that has moved after a knock.
- Book in the next few days: a small chip with no pain, or a rough edge.
How we repair it
- Small chips: smoothed or rebuilt with tooth-coloured filling material (£153 – £263).
- Larger breaks: a temporary crown protects the tooth (£126 per unit) while a permanent crown is made.
- Nerve exposed or tooth split: root canal treatment, or extraction if the tooth can’t be saved (£90 – £165).
Cost: the emergency consultation is £54. If you need treatment, we tell you the price before we start, and nothing is done without your agreement. All fees are on our prices page, taken from The Dentist West Midlands’ price list.

Frequently asked questions
Can a broken tooth wait until Monday?
If there’s no pain and only a small chip, usually yes. Cover any sharp edge. If it hurts, the break is large, or you can see pink or red inside the tooth, get it seen sooner.
Can you stick the broken piece back on?
Sometimes, for a clean break of a front tooth. Keep the piece in milk and bring it with you.
How much does an emergency appointment cost?
