Wisdom tooth pain
Most wisdom tooth pain is an infection of the gum over a part-erupted tooth. It’s called pericoronitis. It can flare up quickly, but it usually settles with the right treatment.

Signs
- Pain and swelling at the back of the mouth, sometimes into the ear or throat
- Gum over the tooth that’s sore, red or swollen, or a bad taste
- Pain on biting, or difficulty opening your mouth fully
What helps now
- Brush the area gently, even if it’s sore. Food trapped under the gum feeds the infection.
- Rinse with warm salty water several times a day.
- Take painkillers if they’re safe for you.
What we do
We clean under the gum, relieve the pressure and, where needed, prescribe medication. If the tooth keeps causing trouble, is decayed, or can’t come through properly, we discuss taking it out. Wisdom tooth and surgical extractions are £165 – £734, depending on how difficult the tooth is. We confirm the fee after examining you and taking an X-ray.
Cost: the emergency consultation is £54. If you need treatment, we tell you the price before we start, and nothing is done without your agreement. All fees are on our prices page, taken from The Dentist West Midlands’ price list.

Do I need my wisdom tooth out straight away?
Not usually. Most flare-ups settle with cleaning and care. Removal is considered if the problem keeps coming back, or the tooth is decayed or damaging the tooth in front.
