Toothache: emergency dentist in Birmingham

Throbbing, keeping you awake, or not touched by painkillers? Here’s what you can do now, and how we stop the pain.

What you can do right now

  • Painkillers: if they’re safe for you, ibuprofen and paracetamol can be taken together. Follow the packet doses. Don’t take ibuprofen if you’re asthmatic and it affects you, are pregnant, or have stomach or kidney problems. Never put aspirin on the gum.
  • Keep your head raised at night with an extra pillow. Lying flat often makes throbbing worse.
  • Avoid very hot, cold or sweet food and drink on that side.
  • Clove oil on cotton wool, held against the tooth, can numb it for a while.

When toothache is urgent

Book an emergency appointment if the pain is severe, keeps you awake, lasts more than a day or two, or comes with swelling, a bad taste or a raised spot on the gum. Those are signs of infection. Painkillers and antibiotics can dull it, but they don’t fix the cause.

Common causes and what we do

  • Deep decay or a cracked filling: we remove the decay and place a sedative dressing or filling (£153 – £263).
  • An inflamed or dying nerve: we can start root canal treatment to save the tooth, or take it out if you prefer (£90 – £165).
  • An abscess: we drain the infection where possible and treat the tooth. See abscess and swelling.
  • Wisdom tooth gum infection: see wisdom tooth pain.

Cost: the emergency consultation is £54. If you need treatment, we tell you the price before we start, and nothing is done without your agreement. All fees are on our prices page, taken from The Dentist West Midlands’ price list.

Frequently asked questions

Can I be seen today?

Often, yes. When a same-day time is free it appears on our booking page, and you can book it straight away. You can also call 0121 582 4557. We answer whenever we can, and if we miss your call we’ll text you a booking link.

Will you just give me antibiotics?

Only if they’re clinically needed, for example when infection is spreading. Antibiotics don’t cure toothache caused by decay or a dying nerve. The tooth itself has to be treated.

Can you save the tooth?

Often, yes, with a filling or root canal treatment. We’ll explain the options and costs, including extraction, so you can choose.

How much does an emergency appointment cost?

The emergency consultation is £54. Any treatment is priced and agreed with you before it starts. You can see typical fees on our prices page.
