Emergency tooth extraction

When a tooth is badly broken, infected or too painful to save, or you simply want it out, we can usually take it out at an emergency appointment. We always talk you through the alternatives first.

When an extraction makes sense

  • The tooth is broken below the gum or too decayed to repair.
  • Severe infection where you don’t want, or can’t have, root canal treatment.
  • A wisdom tooth that keeps flaring up (see wisdom tooth pain).

If the tooth could be saved, we’ll tell you, with the cost of root canal treatment, so it’s your choice.

What to expect

  • We check your medical history and medicines. Tell us if you take blood thinners.
  • We usually take an X-ray to see the roots.
  • The area is numbed fully before we start. You feel pressure, not sharp pain.
  • You get written aftercare. Read our bleeding after extraction advice too.

Cost

Simple extraction £90 – £165. Surgical or wisdom tooth extraction £165 – £734, depending on difficulty. Emergency consultation £54. We confirm the exact fee before we start.

Frequently asked questions

Can I have a tooth out on the same day?

Often, yes, when a same-day time is free and it’s safe to go ahead. Some infections need calming down first, and some teeth need a longer appointment.

How much is an emergency extraction?

£90 – £165 for a simple extraction, or £165 – £734 for surgical and wisdom teeth, plus the consultation.

Is this an NHS emergency dentist?

No, we’re private. For an NHS urgent appointment, call NHS 111. They will assess you over the phone and refer you to an NHS urgent dental service if a slot is available.
