Temporary filling kits: do they help?
A pharmacy temporary filling kit can cover a lost filling or a small hole for a few days. It isn’t a repair, and it isn’t for a tooth that’s throbbing or swollen.

When a kit is reasonable
- A filling has fallen out and the tooth is only mildly sensitive.
- You’re away, or can’t be seen for a day or two.
When not to use one
- The tooth is throbbing, keeps you awake, or there’s swelling. That suggests infection, and sealing it in can make it worse.
- The tooth is badly broken or has a sharp edge.
- To stick a crown back on. Use a crown cement, not filling material. See lost filling or crown.
How to use one
- Clean and gently dry the tooth.
- Roll a small amount of material and press it into the hole. Bite gently to shape it.
- Remove the excess so your bite doesn’t feel high. Avoid chewing on it.
Then book in to have the tooth repaired properly: a filling is £153 – £263.
