Children’s dental injuries: what parents should do
Falls and knocks to the mouth are common in children. Stay calm. Most injuries look worse than they are, but some need seeing quickly.

First steps
- Check for injuries elsewhere. A head injury, drowsiness or vomiting means A&E first.
- Stop bleeding with a clean, damp cloth, pressing gently for 10–15 minutes. A cold compress helps swelling.
- Find any broken pieces or teeth and keep them in milk.
Baby teeth
- Knocked out: don’t put it back. Do get your child checked.
- Pushed in, loose or moved: book a check. It may settle, but we’ll make sure the adult tooth underneath is safe.
- Turns grey weeks later: book a check. It can be a sign the nerve has been affected.
Adult teeth (usually from about age 6)
- Knocked out: this is an emergency. Follow our knocked-out tooth steps and get seen within the hour.
- Chipped or broken: keep the piece and book soon. See broken or chipped tooth.
Call 999 or go to A&E now if swelling is spreading towards your eye, down your neck or under your tongue, you’re finding it hard to breathe or swallow, you have a high temperature with facial swelling, bleeding won’t stop after 20–30 minutes of firm pressure, or you’ve had a serious injury to your face or head.

- Or book online, any time of day or night. Our booking page shows the live diary. Pick a time and pay a £20 deposit to hold it. The deposit is refundable when you attend.
- Come to 341 Birmingham Road, Great Barr, B43 7AP. We’re just off junction 7 of the M6, with parking on site.
Frequently asked questions
Should I put my child’s baby tooth back in?
No. Re-implanting a baby tooth can damage the adult tooth underneath. Keep it and get your child checked.
Do you see children in an emergency?
Yes. Children are seen with a parent or guardian.
